Quick bites: The not-so-humble oatcake

There’s something profoundly comforting about oat-based foods, such as porridge and oatcakes. It may be time to revisit this nourishing pantry staple, thanks to Nairn’s offering a modern take on the classic, with its range of Nairn’s Scottish Oatcakes and Fine Milled Oatcakes.

While at first glance you might dismiss the humble oatcake, truth is that it’s an easy option for a quick lunch or appetiser. Made with wholegrain oats, the range is vegan, wheat free and high in fibre, to keep energy levels up and satiation for longer; the perfect snack for busy teenagers or athletes.

With no artificial colour, flavouring or preservative, it just takes a little imagination to add oatcakes to meals – dunk them into your soup, add hummus and salad, use as a crumb topping.

There’s a swag of pretty nifty recipes on the nairns-oatcakes.com website and you can also check out the many flavours (our fave is the fruit and seed oatcakes).
